In this exhaustively researched and absorbing volume, renowned writer Clinton Heylin traces the history of the bootleg record industry and copyright law's attempts to keep up with it. There is an astonishing wealth of information as Heylin discovers its origins in Southern California in 1969 and follows the story through to the CD era. Click here for more information.
Hey IngridMichelle, … Hey IngridMichelle, he is referencing “Rambling” Jack Elliot. Rambling Jack was a folk singer back in the day that also looked up to and essentially impersonated Woody Guthrie. You can hear him sing with Bob on the Bootleg Series Volume 7 on “Mr Tambourine Man.”
What does the … What does the phrase “like Jack” mean? Dylan used it a lot (in other vid clips as well). I don’t know if it’s a guy named Jack who he knew of, or if it was just a phrase. Does anyone know?
Does anyone know … Does anyone know the guy that’s sitting on Dylan’s right, and the guy on the left? I’ve always loved this little snippet. I agree with a previous poster here…Donovan is good, but he knows his songwriting is not in the same class as Bob’s.
HE’S A WINNAH! GIVE … HE’S A WINNAH! GIVE THE MAN HIS CHOICE OF TEDDY BEARS! Hey, thanks for lettin’ us know who the they were talking about. It allows one to see where Dylan is coming from at this stage in his life, who’s works he liked and those he didn’t. Peace
goofydog2: The … goofydog2: The video is cutted right after they applaude for Donovan, so it doesn’t take 5 seconds for him to grab the guitar and Donovan even requests Dylan to play baby blue therefore I think he had the patience after all In this video anyways, I don’t know the guy
Donovan has one … Donovan has one album , thinkin will I last ?.. Dylan’s huge since 62… Don sings a “softy” song, Bob hits hard with “yonder stands your orphan with his gun” destroys him! Wonder if Sunny Goodge Street was written then?
I think the word ‘ … I think the word ‘jack’ is used is just the adjective form, if that’s grammatically correct? Like I don’t want any of that jack stuff (lousy or unwelcome stuff) The chick walking in @ :22 looks as though she wasn’t expecting that many people to be there. Either that, or she was hit by the ‘mood’ of the conversation??? Something seems to have set her back a step. I’ve seen her in a few clips with Dylan, so I imagine she is his first true love?
Agreed. That’s why … Agreed. That’s why I asked that question. Hard to see him taking a swipe at Kerouac, but who is Jack, then? I think all artists take swipes at each other from time to time. However, yes, Dylan was at Kerouac’s funeral, and he honored him very much… you see it perferated throughout his music. Donovan was the hero in that scene and what makes it sweet is it is for real. Talk about your reality TV. This is the original and very real and wonderfully poignant.
Dylan taking a … Dylan taking a swipe at Kerouac? I doubt it, don’t you? I mean, Jack was a words-smith without the music. But I do notice that as soon as Dylan starts gettin a little frisky about ‘whomever’, Donovan boldly dives in there and breaks it up with his diddly. Notice Donovan finishes at 2:10 and Dylan is up and has Donovan’s guitar in his hands by 2:15. Not giving Donovan much chance for another tune. Dylans seems little crass in his youth. Didn’t seem to have much patience for anyone but himself?
what’s interesting … what’s interesting is his little comment just after that … “He plays like Jack, man!” … Who is “Jack”? It was kind of a jab… and I hope it wasn’t at Kerouac.

For sure. I’ve … For sure. I’ve always really liked this Donovan performance, even though I like Bob’s better. Can anyone recommend a good Donovan album with songs similar to the one he plays here?

I see your point, it’s a good one. Still, Dylan is certainly hyper about most everything in this clip…
